I installed the latest version of DW. Nonetheless, after starting, it asks it can download an install another update. Is this as intended? For a variety of reasons (including security), I rather download the package and install all of it locally. Thanks.

It likely is intended because the installer (published by January 2024) provides you with version 6.1.0, and the updater on top (currently) with version 6.1.1 (published by February 20). If this bothers you, Help -> Update Mode allows you to disable to check and fetch the updates by the program itself. It then were up to you to monitor the progress of the work on the GitHub page, and to eventually build the program for yourself. Excluding critical bug fixes, so far, updates were published about once per month. In the past, new installers for an upgrade were published less frequently.

Building and testing installers for the three different platforms usually keeps me busy for an entire weekend, while providing a new online-update is a matter of minutes. From user perspective an online update is basically clicking 'OK' once, while removing an older installation, and doing a fresh install is much more effort and also poses the danger to remove own macros, plugins or other files. For these reasons, I only publish a new set of installers once there is a real need.

From a security point of view, manual installers require admin rights and, and in my opinion pose a higher risk than an automatic update. Automatic updates install a new datawarrior jar file only, of which the entire source code is published. The mechanism DataWarrior used for doing the automatic update is also open-source. Thus, this is fully transparent and, at least in my opinion, should not be a security issue.
